A discussion of |
|
C O M P A T I B I L I T Y |
|
Expanding your system and |
exploring new worlds |
| -------------
----------------------------------------------------
A lot of ATARI users are concerned about the compatibility of their
software with our high resolution true color boards.
Compatibility is a key issue when attempting to improve the system
performance through hardware upgrades. This is especially true for graphic
cards. The ability to expand a system greatly depends on the way how
the operating system handles I/O operations (like producing an output on
the screen), additional hardware and the accompaning software drivers.
Fortunately, the ATARI computers feature GEM. GEM consists of several
software layers, each providing an increasing freedom and independence from
the underlying hardware components.
One of these GEM layers is called VDI (Virtual Device Interface). By
exchanging the existing ATARI specific VDI portion of the GEM environment,
the ATARI system can accommodate a wide range of other display devices.
Therefore we have not only tried to develop a unique and powerful graphics
expansion board but also a VDI driver that emulates the original, which
maintains a high degree of compatibility while extending the capabilities
according to the provided hardware features.
Considering these facts, all programs can be divided into three groups:
a) programs that use the VDI as the only interface to produce ANY output on
the screen.
b) programs that seem to require one of the original Atari modes to run
properly.
c) programs that use the VDI AND CUSTOM ROUTINES to update the display.
Case 'a' programs show little or no difference when used in conjunction
with the CyReL M16-1280 boards. Almost all major software titles can be
found in this group. These applications allow the user to take advantage of
e.g. higher resolutions (in some cases even higher refresh rates), more
colors and sometimes even faster output speeds. Fortunately most of them are
designed according to the GEM and ATARI guidelines and therefore can be
used instantly without any additional system modifications.
Case 'b' programs are a little bit more difficult to deal with. Most of
these programs use the information of the Getrez (XBios4) operating system
call to find out more about the state of the display. Instead of
examining the (correct and available) informations provided by the VDI
some programmers seem to prefer the XBios call. This can lead to some
surprising results:
THE CALL CAN ONLY RETURN A CODE TO DESCRIBE THE GRAPHICS MODE WHICH IS
CURRENTLY BEING USED BY THE BUILT-IN ATARI VIDEO CIRCUITRY!
Original intention: a program wants to find out if the current screen
resolution supports all the requirements (e.g. at least 640x400)
Effect: Some programs refuse to run even when using a
sufficiently high resolution because it might be that the ATARI VIDEO
CIRCUITRY is operating in a lower mode, and thus the XBios call returns an
unacceptable value. Note that we support a 'two monitor' configuration,
consisting of our graphics card connected to one monitor and the
simultaneous use of the screen output generated by the Atari connected to
a second monitor. WE DO NOT IMPOSE ANY RESTRICTIONS WHATSOEVER regarding
the mode in which the Atari must be placed. Our cards even allow 'multi-
monitor' setups with up to four CyReL cards per single system + the Atari
output.
Patch: We provide custom XBIOS driver that can be installed plus an
accessory that allows the user to define the return value of the XBios call
to eliminate about 90% of the described problems.
Nonetheless we would like to urge EVERY developer to adopt the VDI method
for any inquiries regarding screen size and/or screen attributes!
Further we have to add all programs which take advantage of certain
hardware register layouts and ATARI specific hardware features to group
'b'. The use of such features prevents these programs from being used with
a graphics card. A number of monochrome-only drawing programs and
almost all of the games and entertainment software titles fall into that
category.
This is not limited to CyReL cards and applies to all system expansions
as long as they are not specifically supported by those programs.
Group 'c' programs can prove to be the hardest to adapted by the user to run
on any graphics card, since some of the screen output may end up at the
wrong place and most likely in the wrong format. There is little the user
(or we) could do to correct this problem, which means that in almost all
cases the developer or author of the program must re-write at least a part
of the code.
The only way to prevent such problems is to fully support the VDI interface
from the very beginning. With the continuous development and
introduction of new ATARI systems, it represents the only way to maintain
compatibility with new ATARI features and ultimately all third party
products.
Further it is the only way to guarantee the portability of programs
in case the user intends to upgrade to a bigger system. Obviously there
will be future developments that cannot be forseen and thus will
remain unsupported by today's software titles. But we can at least do our
share to improve flexibility and user-friendlyness for years to come.
This adaptation of programs is a process that has already begun and
benefits all, the user, the developer and the manufacturer of e.g. the
graphic boards. The developer can take advantage of new improved screen
output, a higher number of on-screen colors, and not to forget new and
evolving market niches. The user benefits through improvements in
appearance, comfort, features and better ergonomics while the
manufacturer can take advantage of increasing market opportunities.
We at Cybercube welcome the introduction of the Falcon. We see it as an
interesting and important addition to the Atari product line. It will help
create a market that is increasingly oriented towards graphic and video
applications. Furthermore it will help educate the user base in regards to
the requirements of modern desktop video technology. This aspect
should not be underestimated.
It is our goal to provide a quality product for the professional user or the
serious home user. With on-screen resolutions of e.g. 2048x1024 in 256
colors, refresh rates that can go beyond 100 Hz, real (no less than 16
Million colors) True Color capabilities with resolutions of e.g.
640x480, 800x600, 960x512 or even 1024x512 and virtual resolutions up to
4096x4096 (non-interlaced) we do not anticipate any problems regarding the
evolving Falcon market.
Through the additional expansion capabilities of the cards (which is for
instance being utilized by the CyReL VidiMix8 desktop video module) we
think that we have a very promising platform to offer. A platform that
easily integrates into the ever expanding Atari environment.
But we are still convinced that there is a need of a co-operation between
users, software-developers and hardware manufacturers in order to make this
concept work. We hope that our contributions might help to establish
the Atari computers as a viable alternative to the popular systems in
the DTP, CAD and desktop video markets.
In this spirit, I would like to thank you for your interest in our
products.
Best regards, CYBERCUBE RESEARCH LTD.

CYBERCUBE [Ralf] at 20:24 EDT
The following message is intended as our answer to some very irritating
events and claims that have appeared in various topics throughout GEnie:
We have always tried to do our best to work together with other Atari
developers to make products for your Atari system more compatible.
The flexibility and ease of use of our VDI display drivers have been of
special concern to us. We have welcomed the structure of GEM that
requires only a single display driver in order to expand the original
operating system and feature set.
The built-in, intuitive windows based operating system, which has been a
standard feature since 1985, has now in a similar fashion been adopted
by a increasing number of computer platforms.
We value this open and user-friendly operating system as one of the
major reasons why users opted to buy an Atari system.
The integrated GEM environment provides a simple and easily manageable
way of upgrading your entire computer system and thus keeping it in
lock-step with the latest developments.
Now we are witnessing some very distressing and irritating attempts to
force Atari users to the same confinements that users of other platforms
ever since had to endure:
- Special display drivers for every different add-on and mode.
- Special display drivers for every different program.
- Even new drivers for every new version of the same program.
Limiting the customer's choices to the own selection of products, a few
endorsed packages and even statements of deliberate actions to block out
competitors, make it hard to promote the open spirit of the entire
platform.
Any serious company that cares about their customers will cater to
their needs. Restricting choices does not reflect proper business
behaviour. Such conduct will ultimately lead to a hopelessly segmented
market, a market without any viability to support or attract new
developments.
Instead of productive co-operation and joint efforts to take advantage
of new market potentials, we have seen misleading attempts to make
customers belief that there is only one right choice and the existence
of an ultimate answer for all applications.
This has never been nor will it ever be our policy.
We think that we offer a good quality product, and we stand by our
commitment to continue to improve our products on a regular basis.
We try to provide honest product support. Accurate, reliable and down to
earth. Keeping our customers up to date and informing them about our
progress is a key strategy for us. We have our own experienced staff
working on the drivers and associated software in-house.
Our customers have direct access to the developers as well as customized
versions and we appreciate their input to further improve our products.
It in turn provides us with a invaluable insight in our customer's
needs. This feedback provides us with all the information about what we
have to change, add or remove.
Since we also develop the products we sell, we know exactly how to help
a customer with his application, what to do and where to seek for
answers, and most of all: we care about our products as we care for our
customers. Here at Cybercube we place great emphasis on our relation
with individual customers. This is a direct result of our experience in
dealing with industrial applications over the last years.
Cybercube has also a tradition of building custom designed products. We
take pride in our workmanship, we adhere to the highest quality, we
place reliability and dependability before purely commercial
considerations, and we back our products with solid support.
All our products are developed right here in North America. We support
our local distributors, local suppliers and local contractors and
dealers. Every unit must comply with our quality standards, must pass a
rigorous set of tests and a minimum of 80 hours of operation and
burn-in.
The CyReL graphics and imaging products are custom designs, developed
specifically for the Atari. It meant extra efforts, additional
expenditures as well as longer development times.
But we are convinced that it was worth it. We now offer fully integrated
solution, suited for a wide range of applications. We even incorporated
some custom designed IC's, industrial strength components, military
grade boards and a comprehensive set of drivers and utilities for your
platform, not just something you tried to avoid by not buying a clone or
different system.
However, it is not our habit to brag about dubious sales figures, nor do
we pressure anybody into any sort a deal because of pending price
increases. Quite to the contrary: We invite prospective customers to
make a sound and well balanced decision when they plan to buy one of our
products.
We like to discuss the intended applications that the user has in mind
and we tell the customer when we honestly feel that our solution might
not be the best for his intended use and refer him to our competitors.
It is our belief that only these simple rules can guarantee a satisfied,
productive and confident user base.
Just to give you a glimpse of the scope of products that we have been
working on lately, here a few examples:

any obligations.

CYBERCUBE [Ralf] at 23:39 EDT
Greetings,
boy, what a busy day this has been. I've started my day by attending
an keynote address and presentation of Microsoft's CEO Bill Gates.
Bill has been on a one day tour to Canada to deliver his speech
at the Ryerson Politechnical Univerity here in Toronto. Ryerson is
proud to have become a university after educating many students
under it's old form as a polytechnic institute.
Bill Gate's 'Putting Technology to Work for Canadians' focused on
the special role of the $45 billion information technology market
in Canada and it's effects on North America. He then continued to
outline his and Microsoft's vision of the future of the digital age.
One of his most often used words: richness. Rich GUIs, richly packed
applications, interacting in a rich way, enriching our lives.
Well, certainly his and Microsoft's success have 'enriched' the
lives of some now well known personalities as well as created a
whole new infrastructure. People have started to do their jobs
in a different way, taking advantage of IT tools and they
now, according to Gates, perform in richer ways. Well then,
now you heard it. *,<
\_/
Next, I had to attend a couple of meetings, and we just received
a new batch of cards, all ready to be subjected to their final
tests. Further, we have come around and finished some long awaited
press releases, of which the first ones should have been U/Led by
now.
We have further pursued to our efforts to create new cooperations
with other Atari vendors and we hope to be able to make some
exciting announcements soon.
Further, I am pleased to report that our new products, due for
Fall '93 are coming along nicely. They will once again, offer
an integrated environment and help you to better organize your
system as well as increase your efficiency.
Closing, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that
Mario (DMC) will be demonstrating the cards at the Houston
Atari Safari (Aug. 21). Everybody interested in and around
Texas should try to attend this promising show.
Next month, we will be represented at the Glendale show, and
we are confident that it will be as equally successful as
the years before.
Take care. Enjoy your updates. More is coming.
Ralf.

Thanks Ralf! Believe it or not that made complete sense!:-) I'm looking at
the Mitsibushi Diamond Scan 17. I went and checked the list and it's not
there but the 16 and 20 are so that should be close enough.:-) I'll send you
the specs to add should I buy it. BTW, this list is great! Would it be
possible to upload it or is it considered part of the Cyrel package?
Sounds good on the monitor driver program! I could really use some high
res monochrome modes... or is it duochrome on a color monitor? Look forward to
seeing all this great stuff your working on!
Greg, Don't worry, I'll let you know exactly what happens!:-)

Greg,
the resolution changer utility is already a part of the CyReL SUNRISE
package. What we are going to release is our in-house timing editor
that uses the monitor list as a database to create the different
video timings.
Joey,
sorry, but the list is a part of our software package and NOT public
domain. We've put quite some efforts in that package, and the list
as well. So for now, this list is for the benefit of CyReL users only.
Yep, we are working on our monochrome CyReL MonoFlex VDI, which will
give you up to 2048x1536 on screen (8192x2048 in virtual res modes)
and features fast screen redraws (about 3000% faster than the normal
monochrome modes).
Enjoy the weekend. I'm outta here!

Has anyone ever gotten LDW to work with the Cyrel card? I use the card at
1024x786x256 res, LDW comes up (the screen) then locks up the system (this is
on a TT).
Also Calligrapher 3 does not work. It does the same thing as LDW.
I have the latest VDI.
In true coler mode (800x600) the MultiTOS icons are all monocrome (all white
or black). Does anyone have the same problem or is it just my system?

Rolf,
You'll find that most of the Codehead products won't work with the Cyrel
card. Something to do with the way they display text on the screen.
Calligrapher, Avant Vektor etc. all boot okay, but you can't work with them.
Also, if you try and display a file from within MaxiFile, same thing. To bad,
I love the Codehead stuff.

anybody interested in the new CyReL MPT-16 module to support the
CyReL MonoFlex VDI should send e-mail to CYBERCUBE. We have a
new information package regarding this exciting product.
Daniel,
the CyReL cards have been designed with low power consumption in
mind. Refer to the appendices in your manual for more information
about the power consumption.
About the 'black-out' problem: Are you using any kind of weird
screen saver combination ?
Rolf,
sorry, I promised that already. Now I really have to look into
that mysterious LDW Power bug. I'll let you know what we find out.
Multi-TOS & True Color: We have advanced the development of the
256 color VDI in the last few months. This month, there will be
a major upgrade in the TC version as well. This should then fix
the Multi-TOS problems you are referring to. Please note that the
icons for Multi-TOS may be stored in a special file and you have
to enable this file (DESKCICN.RSC).

yep. What puzzles me a bit about LDW Power is the fact that it

Turns out the 'Black-out' effect is the result of Spelling Sentry. I had it
set for background checking and when I type a word wrong (quite often) it
blinks the screen. Well, for some reason, sometimes it doesn't come back, it
just blinks it off. I've disabled Spelling Sentry and is fine again.

Ralf,
Good news! I got LDW power to work even at 1024x768 resolution. The problem
appears to be with MACCEL3 and SERMOUSE. If I have either one of them
activated in the auto folder (not both at the same time) then the system hangs
as soon as I start LDW Power. That should narrow down the problem to looking
at SERMOUSE only.
This also fixes the hang in Calligrapher 3, but Caligrapher 3 still does not
draw to the screen correctly, and as Daniel indicated the CodeHead stuff does
not seem to work properly because they are doing their own VDI stuff.
I do have a problem with MIGRAPHs OCR and TOUCHUP. The programs work except
that their icon menu is totaly blank. There should be a bunch of small icons,
one to each grid position--only the grid shows.

Rolf,
congrats! Fine, now that we know the culprit I can go ahead and
check what really is causing all those problems... However, I
suspect that the VECTOR SENTRY built-in into SERMOUSE collides
somehow with LDW Power. The VECTOR-SENTRY makes sure that the
mouse is still there even if you switch the resolution, change
the VDI or do a ton of foolish things to the system vectors...
Oh well, we'll check it out. +.+

Another real nice screen saver that uses the VDI to entertain

Bob,
overview about the product list, all the ordering information,
new product announcements... well, basically a description of
all the CyReL stuff available and coming. *,*
\_/
NEW: CyReL AMBIANCE
Want to increase the appeal of your desktop ?
Tired of the old 'gray' carpet underneath your icons ?
Why not replace your boring desktop patterns with dazzling pictures ?
Want to work in a new color dimension ?
Define your own color fades for the background ?
No problem! Cybercube is pleased to announce the CyReL Ambiance
utility for the CyReL M16-1280 graphics cards. Simply select
your favourite picture, image or clip and use the CyReL Ambiance
accessory to configure your custom designed desktop layout.
The CyReL Ambiance utility features 5 different image/backdrop modes
and comes complete with a number of exciting color fades, images
and clips.
The present version requires the CyReL SUNRISE M16-1280 cards,
the CyReL VDI Driver (Version >1.36) and depending on the image,
display mode and resolution up to 2 MB of memory.
Most of the time you'll need only a few extra bytes from your main
memory... even if you load an elaborate image into your desktop
background. The installer will always try to utilize any unused
RAM area in the video RAM buffer of the cards before occupying
the main memory.
Planned releases will also work on other cards, regular STs and
even the Falcon.
CyReL M16-1280 users can order this utility for just $15 directly
from Cybercube.
Ralf.

Greg, Works great so far! I need some better drivers though, the ones I
have don't do it justice. It supports up to 1280x1024 at 130hz but the
closest I could find was the 1024x768 at 86.9Hz. I'm just waiting on Ralf to
release some new toys... as usual.:-)
I listed a full spec sheet in the DynaCADD topic if anyones interested. If
nobody objects I can post again here but I was trying to avoid a double
post... Sysopsis?:-) The monitors really nice!
In my search I also discovered monitor sizes aren't always the actual
display size. The actual display size on a 17" monitor is 16". They actually
count the .5" border behind the plastic molding. I checked my 14" Atari
monitor and it's the same way, 13". I've been meaning to check Atari's 19" to
see if it's really 18". Thats all diagonal measurements by the way.

I really haven't tested the screen saver with aladdin since I only use it to
download files at 9600 baud.
If you remember I reported that the screen saver and Calamus did not get along
with the serial mouse on August 24th. At that time you sugested that I
deactivate the screen saver and let you know what happened.
When I did deactivate the screen saver Calamus no longer crashed. So since
then I have not used the screen saver portion of the SERIAL MOUSE MANAGER when
in SL. The manager does work with all my other programs fine.

CYBERCUBE [Ralf] at 20:16 EDT
Bob, Greg,
hmmm, let me share with you some insight into the 'inner workings'
of the Serial Mouse Driver. This driver constantly monitors any
changes to some key system vectors, and if it finds that they
have changed, it tries to adjust to that new situation. This is
important due to several situations:
1. Keyboard vector may be changed by another program:
Since you certainly want to 'wake-up' the system once you
hit a key, the driver has to re-install itself to continue
to be able to monitor any key presses!
2. Resolution changes:
If the user uses some of the ALT-1,2,3... keys to change the
resolution, the driver has to make sure it won't be 'thrown'
out of the vector chains.
This vital technique now seems to somehow collide with the mentioned
programs.Calamus seems to emply a simmilar strategy to make sure
you don't have an virus infested system, corrupted executable files,
and to provide a safeguard against any system crashes.
At first sight, it now appears to me that we have to examine this
interaction a bit more carefully than we have apparently done in the
past. *,*
\_/
I regret any inconveniences this might have caused and I will keep
you updated on the results of our tests.
Ralf.

CYBERCUBE [Ralf] at 20:24 EDT
The following is a part of a discussion I am having with some
users and I thought I might as well share it with you here as well:
<LONG POST!>
--------------------------------
The CyReL SUNRISE M16-1280 High Resolution True Color Graphics cards
have been custom designed for the Atari TT030 or Atari Mega STE
machines.
They are NOT adapted PC-ISA cards!
Let me point out a couple of interesting, yet vital differences:
1. Industrial and Military grade quality components and boards:
Rigorous electronic, mechanical and visual testing is being
performed to assure the highest quality standards.
Our boards consist of 6-layered boards designed to minimize
cross-talk and interference of signals on the board level
(VERY important for high speed TRUE COLOR operation, more on
that later). The pure manufacturing cost of such a board
almost doubles with each additional layer. We buy all our
parts locally, thus supporting our home economy and jobs.
We specify high quality brand name components ONLY.
Each board is tested for 48 hours before shipping.
2. High speed design: Our graphics cards have been designed with
high speed operation in mind. The entire architecture is being
based on ultra-fast VRAM components, featuring a 32-bit video
bus capable of transferring a max. of 166 MEGABYTES/second to
the video logic. The 16-bit VME interface to the CPU can tranfer
anything from 6 MB/s up to (special CyReL M16-1280 mode)
60 MB/s of data. This was only possible because WE designed the
cards, and WE defined all parameters that could influence the
performance of the boards.
3. Ultra-high resolutions:
Here a few examples of what the CyReL M16-1280 can display
(all modes tested on a 21" IDEK 5421 monitor):
1024x1024 in 256 colors
1280x1024 in 256 colors
1600x1024 in 256 colors
2048x1024 in 256 colors
3400x 600 in 256 colors
1024x1600 in 256 colors
1280x1280 in Monochrome
1600x1280 in Monochrome
2048x1024 in Monochrome
2048x1536 in Monochrome
512x 512 in True Color (real 24/32 bit per Pixel!)
640x 480 in True Color
768x 512 in True Color
800x 600 in True Color
1024x 512 in True Color
As can be easily seen, these resolutions by far exceed what any
VGA card can display. A high speed design was absolutely
crucial for these performance levels.
4. Very high refresh rates:
Depending on the mode and the monitor used, we supply over 80 (!)
predefined video modes with refresh rates ranging from as little
as 50 Hz (for low end monitors, TV applications) up to 120 Hz.
The hardware supports refresh rates up to 260 Hz.
5. Custom designed parts:
Best performance through the use of custom designed parts. These
are only available to Cybercube and play a central role in the
flexibility and performance of the CyReL M16-1280 cards.
6. Video Clocks and the flexibility to adapt to different monitors:
Our boards feature a selection of 70 (!) INDIVIDUAL video clock
frequencies. They can be freely selected via software. This
allows for a very precise matching of whatever needs the monitor
might have! And in case you need to have more: The CyReL expansion
modules or even EXTERNAL devices may inject their custom video
clock to be used by the video engine on the CyReL M16-1280.
We supply a list with over 500 monitor specifications to every
CyReL M16-1280 customer. This list is constantly being updated
to include the latest developments of the monitor technology.
The user can further select between over 80 predefined modes.
A special VIDEO TIMING EDITOR allows video timings to your
custom specifications.
7. Compact design utilizing the latest surface mount technology:
Though the use of high density devices and components we have
achieved a unique level of compactness and integration. Our
design combines everything from economic monochrome modes to
dazzling True Color modes, even photo-realistic video modes.
We have taken great care to fully adhere to the VME standard
and guidelines. We have consulted several times with Motorola
regarding various design questions to make sure that our design
meets the stringent requirements, even in industrial applications.
We use only high quality SCHROFF (renowned german VMEBus
accessories maker) parts for board mounting, faceplates and other
hardware to guarantee perfect fit and long lasting reliability.
8. Unique custom designed expansion modules:
Since we designed the CyReL M16-1280 from the ground up, we have
acquired the necessary know-how to build custom designed expansion
modules for our video graphics system. One example:
The CyReL VidiMix8/16 modules provide on a small form factor
of about 5 cm x 10 cm (approx. 2" x 3"):
REAL TIME TRUE COLOR DIGITIZER digitizes either in PAL or NTSC
resolution is programmable
(e.g. 768x535) No CPU intervention
necessary.
THREE (!) LAYER VIDEO OUTPUT live video, computer animations and
titling overlay can be combined
in real time with no CPU overhead
S-VHS input and output 4 S-VHS/composite inputs and one
S-VHS and one composite video output
STUDIO QUALITY GEN-LOCK syncs even to difficult low quality
VHS video recorders in search/playback
mode
HIGH QUALITY VIDEO ENCODER works in 12 international TV modes.
Encodes RGB and 5 different YC video
formats
ALL PARAMETER FULLY SOFTWARE No external boxes, switches or
CONTROLLABLE difficult setups necessary
And best of all, the VidiMix8/16 modules fit ONTOP of our
graphics cards. You get a replacement faceplate with each
VidiMix8/16 to make room for the new connector ports.
No external boxes or dangling cables. At the SRP price of
U.S. $495 we think that this is a unique and very attractive
package.
9. Dedicated programmers:
Two in-house programmers develop all the necessary drivers and
software for our graphics cards. These programmers know the
board and all the available features. The custom designed GEM
drivers feature a high degree of flexibility and compatibility.
The CyReL M16-1280 ships with more than 1.4 MB of software
(not including the shareware demos)! Here is a list of the software
packages that are included with every CyReL M16-1280 purchase:
1 CyReL RUN-ME-FIRST Interactive GEM Installation Program
1 CyReL CM16_VIP Initialization & Diagnostic Program Driver
1 CyReL VDI Driver for 256 Color Mode Driver

10. Fast and friendly support:
What does support have to do with PC ISA VGA cards ?
Very much! As opposed to the standard practice with many
'no name' or Taiwan products, we support our customers
in a variety of ways:
GEnie: special CyReL M16-1280 Topic. Updated:

Rob,
yes, as Joye already attested, you can use the PTC1426 with our cards
as you could use any VGA type monitor. We had small 12" monochrome VGA
monitors on it, SVGA monitors and multi-sync monitors. We even have
some timing files for the card + VidiMix that let you use the
trusty SC1224 with it. *,*
\_/
Since the PTC1426 is a 'fixed frequency' monitor rather than a multi-
sync monitor, you are somewhat limited in the max. resolutions on that
tube. We found that you can safely use 800x512 on it. Higher resolutions
might be possible (like true 800x600) but this depends very much on
the particular monitor. Not all monitors are created equal (*grin*) and
so there are variations even if you are looking at a couple of monitors
of the same model. You always have to keep in mind that this monitor
is being used to produces 320x200, 640x200, 640x400 and 640x480 when
used on a TT030. So, even if 800x512 does not sound impressive,
it still is a 33% increase over the max. TT mode and you can work
in 256 colors or even True Color in that resolution.
Should you require more information, please do not hesitate to contact
CYBERCUBE or simply leave a message here!
Joey,
thanks for helping out! Glad you enjoyed working with the PTC1426.
But as always, once you reached a certain level, there is that
insatiable craving for more.... *,*

expectations and laurels you guys are spreading around. +,<

CyReL Ambiance Update:
We've made a couple of changes and additions to improve the performance
and the memory usage when you install the CyReL Ambiance package with
the CyReL SUNRISE M16-1280 graphics cards.
It now uses 0 KB of memory if there is enough room for the background
buffer to be stored on THE CARD ITSELF. This maximises your main memory
space to be used by your applications.
Redraw speeds have been improved dramatically. There is now virtually
no difference between the CyReL Ambiance Dual Layer Image Mode and the
plain old desktop patterns. (Dual Layer Image Mode: you can specify
two image files to be used as a replacement for your desktop background:
a) the first image is being used to 'tile' the entire background, the
b) second one can be placed centered ontop of the first one to provide
a nice focus!)
We will U/L a couple of screenshots showing the CyReL Ambiance
'in action'. If you need more informations, please contact CYBERCUBE.

In cooperation with Gribnif, we've started testing GENEVA on our

best effects is that GENEVA actually improves screen redraw times

Ralf, Is this testing include Neo Desk? Or does it already work with the card?
From some of the posts I've read it seems that to get the most out of Geneva
you should also be using Neo Desk.

Good news on Geneva. I picked up a copy at Glendale, even though I knew it
didn't work properly. We tried it on Mario's machine.
I had faith that you and the Gribnif folks would work it out. Thanks. I look

Ralf, ...while you are at it with 'the card' and Geneva, how 'bout getting
your neighbors to put in a fully loaded version of SL (ALL modules, etc)
running under Geneva ...along with some of the other old standards like WP,
Touch Up, maybe even Avant Vector, etc. and see if you can 'actually' get them
all to live together -and- actually multitask, ...ie. not just run by putting
other prgs. to sleep. I ask this because I would very much like to have
Geneva useable with your card and some of those prgs. BTW, I am a new Cyrel
owner via the Glendale show, but haven't sent in the reg. card yet. I will be
installing the Cyrel soon, when there is a break in the work flow 'round here.

Next time you're by the office, I'll show you some of Stephen's work. He's not

CyReL VDI Update:
OK folks, now for some good news.
I've just got the latest list of squashed bugs and 'added features'.
So, here we go:
1. Running GENEVA as a normal desktop program:
WORKS! The previous problem has been resolved and GENEVA may
now be installed as an AUTO folder program or started
whenever necessary.
2. Invision Icon Problems:
SOLVED!
3. SpeedoGDOS Font-Chain:
OK! Previously it sometimes happened that some of the
SpeedoGDOS fonts 'got lost'. This bug has been fixed.
4. Papillon redraw problems:
SOLVED! Tested with Papillon 1.1, all functions plus the external
modules work as promised. *,*
\_/
5. Damaged 6x6 font:
CORRECTED! Some of the older VDI versions had some 'defects'
The affected characters 'OPQ' have been corrected.
6. TT Artist color problems:
SOLVED! Check this incredible colorful screen saver from
Massimo Farina. Use the CyReL Palette Master to set
colors 16-255 to a 'RAINBOW' and then watch the
stunning graphical effects produced by TT Artist.
If you ever wondered how fast our VDI draws some...
filled circles, arcs, lines, rounded boxes or more,
give it a try!
7. True Color memory allocation problem:
SOLVED! Some programs were previously known to 'chew' on the
desktop icons in True Color mode. This was a direct
result from a corrupted 'linked memory list'. This
bug has been fixed now.
-phew-, quite a list. We would like to thank everybody involved
in the 'debugging' process and we encourage you to keep those
bug reports coming. The new VDI version will be in your private

I tested GENEVA it seems to work ok in 256 color mode, but NeoDesk does not.
If I force Neo to load, it comes up with multi color square blocks where the
Icons are located.
Another program I am having trouble with is STraight Fax 2.0, when I try to
save a fax in ASCII format, the text comes up all garbled. It seems to be the
two fonts that ST fax saves with. It will save ASCII files in TT med mode, but
not in M16 256 color, or True color mode. ST fax saves great with Calamus SL,
First Word, Degas, and IMG.

Ambiance screen-shots: they are ready, we've just have to
get around to U/L them. Thanks for reminding me. I'll see to
it that you guys will have a chance to seem them soon.
Rendered images on the CyReL Catalog Disk:
They are quite 'old' by now. We've used them as the first
test to check the true color capabilities while we were developing
the graphics cards. Since we did not have the rendering capabilities
on the Atari at the time (quite obvious, isn't it?) we used the
excellent shareware ray-tracer VIVID from Stephen Coy. Our many
thanks still go to Stephen for this powerful tool and his cooperation!
The images were created using hand coded objects, entered with an
plain DOS ASCII editor and rendered over a period of 56 hours on a
286 machine. The revised version of the image (now on the Catalog
Disk) was remodelled and ray-traced again on a 486 and took approx.
13 hours to complete. The images were rendered with a resolution
of 1024x512 to check the higher True Color modes of our cards.
There are some more images like those available in the CyReL demo
package.
Greg,
thanks for your bug reports. The best thing I can tell you
right now is to check it with the coming version of the drivers.

...."what do you advise in the way of 19 or 20 inch monitors for use with the

Regarding your question about 19" and 20" monitors, here are some thoughts you
might want to consider before shopping for your next monitor:
There are a great many number of these monitors. They are most of the time
VERY good (no matter what brand you look at) and not cheap either.
We've seen monitors from Hitachi, Mitsubischi, Taxan, NEC, Idek, Phillips,
TTX, Compaq, Toshiba and more.
Our decision to buy the Idek 5421 monitors was based on some of the following
criteria. There is however no single monitor that we would recommend as the
absolute best. Each has it's advantages and defficiencies. Our recommendation:
try before you buy!
1. Price: the Idek monitors were VERY competitive. Idek has
been producing OEM monitors for years and they had just
launched their first monitors under the IDEK banner in
North America at the time we were shopping for monitors.
2. NON-GLARE FLAT SQUARE picture tube : and when I say flat,
I mean flat. There seems to be quite a difference in opinion
between several manufacturers when it comes to flatness.
Flat Square technology tubes have the better BEAM FOCUSSING
giving a much better and sharper image even in the corners
of the display area. Beam focussing makes sure that the
electron beam of the tube still resembles a circle and not
an oval in the outermost areas of the screen, thus gaining
sharpness and color fidelity. All modern high end monitors
employ some sort of beam focussing. If someone tells you
model xxx does not have it, look for a more suitable model!
By no means buy a monitor with that comes without a non-glare
picture tube (unless of course you like to see your mirror-
image all the time)! Some monitors (like the NEC series) require
a front mounted filter to be installed in front of the CRT.
The Idek monitors have an etched surface, thus blocking any
glare.
3. Convergence: How acurately do the THREE electron beams of
a RGB monitor match ? Well, that's what the convergence
parameter is for. Ever wondered why letters have a red (or
green or blue, or any combination of those) shadow or
double image in the border areas of the screen ? This
effect happens when one or more of the beams does not
hit the tube's surface at their ideal position, thus
giving you a slightly shifted second image of the letter
(or whatever else is being displayed).
4. 21" and .26 mm dot pitch: When it comes to big screens
like 21" tubes, you want to display HIGH resolutions
(that is the main reason you want such a beast isn't it ?)
But in order to be able to clearly distinguish
each single pixel, you must have a tube with a very fine
dot pitch. Dot pitch is the distance between two pixel
centers on your screen. The smaller this number (mostly
given in millimeters) the better. But beware, this is one
of the most influential factors on the price of the entire
monitor. The finer the dot pitch, the harder it is to
produce a flawless tube. A single defect can render the
entire tube useless. Until a year or so, a dot pitch of
.31 mm was considered to be good. Nowadays, most monitors
above 20" have something like .28 mm. The Idek offers
.26 mm which gives a very crisp and sharp picture.
5. Bandwidth: I've already discussed this important
performance factor in CAT 16, TOP 12. It would be too
much to repeat all the deatials again. Please refer to the
archive. You should really look for monitors with
a bandwith above 80 MHz.
6. Anti-Static tube: Ever noticed the dust and build-up on
the display surface of your regular monitor ? Does your
monitor make those 'crackling' sounds when you switch it
off ? This may indicate the presense of high electrostatic
fields. They tend to attract dust which accumulates on
the CRT (thus imparing your vision and color perception)
and maybe (I am a bit cautious here since this is not
100% scientifically proven) affecting your health as well.
The Idek was one of the few (at the time we looked at this)
that offered a built-in anti-static feature and therefore
the screen stays virtually dust free and you don't run into
the danger to get 'zapped' if you touch your monitor.
7. User controls: Believe me, you want a monitor that let's
you adjust virtually everything. There is nothing more
frustrating than a monitor with controls hidden behind the
bezel or somewhere in it's big belly!
8. Connectors: It is usual for the high end monitors to have
separate BNC connectors for R,G,B and the sync signals.
This type of connector ensures the highest signal fidelity
(and is probably the most expesive as well). Don't be shocked
to see prices for a 15-pin DSUB cable to BNC ranging from
anything like $30 to $100. We however recommend to purchase
these type of cables because it does not make sense to
buy an expensive high end monitor and then make an attempt
to save a few dollars on the manufacturer's recommended
cable/cabling material.
9. The Energy-Star symbol: This is something relatively new
but we think it will gain momentum and become more and more
important in the future. Monitors that display this 'energy
saving' symbol (a green star) usually have a built-in
'screen saver' function and switch into 'sleep or stand-by'
mode once your screen contents does not change over a certain
amount of time. By switching off parts of the monitors
electronics and drivers, these devices can achieve some
stunning reductions regarding the power consumption. There
are monitors that save up to e.g. 60% when in stand-by mode!
When you do purchase a new monitor (or any electric/electronic
equipment for that fact) now, please consider the advantage
of an energy saving device over conventional equipment!
OK, if you wish, you might also post this in the CyReL topic for others to
enjoy... sorry, it got more elaborate and longer than planned. I hope this
answers some of your questions.
Ralf.
---------- thanks very much Ralf! I really appreciate the clear detail.

We've just received some details about 14" and 15" monitor specials
from Aamazing. These monitors offer a very competitive price/performance
ratio and may represent a good first time buy. Check your local

TTX has also updated their entire monitor line, which are now
offered in a new stylish package. They offer a variety of very
affordable 17" monitors. Please consult the MONITORS.DOC list
on your CyReL M16 disks.
Hitachi just unveiled their new line of high end 21" monitors as well.
Seems that every manufacturer is trying to capture a share of this
expanding market segment. The SuperScan Elite 21 monitor is the
firts in Hitachi's Elite series. It too offers 1600x1200 at a refresh
rate of 66 Hz. Refresh rates in general may range from 5 to 150 (!) Hz.
The monitor has an advanced flat, square CRT featuring .28 mm dot pitch
and Invar mask + AR coating for sharper images and reduced eye-strain.
The 31 microprocessor based control funtions allow a maximum configuration
comfort.
We also got a report from Germany comparing 21 17" monitors from
leading manufacturers. If anybody is interested, I'll post an short
overview.
OK, but first let me get back to my desk tomorrow. We've attended

we've got a report comparing twenty-one 17" monitors.
*,*
\_/
But if you are still interested, I will post a short overview, giving
the highlights and things to watch out for.
Joey,
thanks for reminding me about the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro monitors.
They are a very fine example of the kind of 17" monitors that
have appeared within the last two years.
We've just received another update on the pricing of the TTX
monitors. The MSRP ranges from Cdn $360 (14", SVGA) to Cdn $1200
(17",1280x1024@70Hz).
Idek also has a number of new 21" monitors, compliant with MPR-II
(Low Radiation), 30 min. power down feature, .26 mm dotpitch
currently listing for Cdn $2900 to Cdn $4600. Please note that
these prices do not include the applicable taxes (Canadian orders).
CyReL Serial Mouse Manager and Hotwire, MultiDesk & Maxifile:
We have received several reports that the CyReL Mouse Manager
causes the machine to lock up under certain conditions when any
of the above listed programs are executed.
After investigating the cause of these troubles, we've come up
with these answers:
1. The Serial Mouse Manager monitors the several vectors to
detect the installation of the VDI or any resolution changes.
After detecting a re-directed vector, it tries to hook itself
into the chain again. This technique has worked fine with
a wide number of programs that conform to a documented
vector changing procedure generally known as the XBRA protocol.
There is no way to predict results or guarantee a trouble free
operation if a program does not adhere to said protocol.
This is unfortunately the case with all three mentioned applications.
2. There is however a simple 'trick' to remedy this situation.
Please re-order your AUTO folder programs in such a way that the
CyReL Serial Mouse Manager is located in front of ANY VDI driver
you might have in the AUTO folder.
3. This rather surprising solution works even if you skip the installation
of the CyReL VDI drivers. Therefore, we would like to recommend the
following order of CyReL programs to be used in the AUTO folder:
CM16_VIP.PRG
SERMOUSE.PRG
M16VDI8B.PRG
M16VDITC.PRG
If you have any additional questions or ideas, please contact us

Ralf,
Thanks for the info about putting the mouse manager before the video drivers.
That fixed the hang problem with LDW Power also.
I have a question, is the VDI call vr_trnfm capbable of converting 8 plane
standard raster form to the internal device specific M16 video format (256
paletted color)? I think the standard VDI driver only handles up to 4 planes.
Has this procedure been enhanced in any way? The reason is I am asking is that
I tried to do this the other day and the conversion did not work. If it has
not been enhanced then I can understand the results. However if it is supposed
to work then either I am doing something wrong or there is a bug in vr_trnfm.

Lou,
yep, twenty one of them... OK, I'll try to compile a list with the most
interesting features and post them here.
Rolf,
the vr_trnfm routine has been implemented differently in the 256 color
VDI and the True Color VDI.
In the following I will concentrate on the 256 color version since
this is the most commonly used mode.
The vr_trnfm in the M16VDI8B (CyReL M16 VDI, 256 colors/8bit) can
convert 1-8 planes of device independent rasters to device dependent
rasters. To accelerate the conversion, we recommend that the source and
destination are located at different areas in memory.
It can also convert the device dependent format into 8 plane device
independent format. Once again, use different areas for source and
destination to speed up the conversion.
If you think you found a bug in those (rather complex) conversion
routines, please send me the part of your source that deals with this
routine so that we can check the cause of the problem.
I am glad to hear that you have been able to solve the LDW Power
problem as well. It has really turned out to be a catch-22 situation,
either have a real 'resident' mouse driver or have a more compatible
driver. Fortunately, the 'trick' with the AUTO folder sort works in
both situations!
VidiMix16:
The VidiMix16 uses the full 32-bit per pixel in True Color Mode.
Although you could use the VDI function to convert the incoming
video data to device independent format, we would recommend a
faster way to do this. We have a couple of small utilities that
allow you to record a live video clip in realtime (e.g. 768x576)
at different frame rates, store it in internal memory and then
play it back again. The realtime True Color digitizer either
produces 8bit indexed greyscale, various YUV formats (16/24bit)

The alpha channel information can be used to create chroma keying
effects.

Thanks for the quick response. According to your explanation it seems like the
vr_trnfm should work. I am attempting to convert a 8 plane device independent
raster form to the device dependent format (same number of planes). I am using
different input and output areas. I will investigate further and let you know
through E-mail. It might be my problem. I just needed to get corroboration
from you that the vr_trnfm will work with 8 bit planes.

Rolf, I know when I started doing this stuff it didn't work like I
expected. I'm using GFA and only doing one scanline at a time to save memory
because it's an ACC. I think I moved the screen image to a source buffer,
transformed the image to a destination buffer with the the source set to ST
and the Destination set to GEM. Then you have to take the GEM Destination
buffer and interleave it. The buffer holds the screen in seperated planes.
Anyway, I got it working, it's not too hard.:-) I guess the procedure would
be the reverse for displaying an Image.

Rolf,
the vr_trnfm command is being widely used by such programs as
GEM-View, Papillon, 1stView etc... programs that have to convert
graphics back and forth a lot. If you find any errors in this
code, please let us know. We would appreciate any input on how
we can improve the performance, should you find any bugs.
Joey,
you will find a lot of details about the VidiMix16 in the upcoming
press releases. Sorry, I won't spoil the surprise right now...

CyReL Ambiance 1.08b:
The CyReL Ambiance Desktop Image Manager has been extended and
updated to provide a more flexible control over it's features
even when you make extensive use of program lauchers, shells
and alternate desktops.
CyReL Serial Mouse Release 1.03c:
The Serial Mouse Manager has been updated. We've optimised a
few internal things and changed the SERMOUSE.PRG detection
routine. When you boot your system with the release 1.02c
(or earlier) and you do not have the SERMOUSE.PRG program activated
in your AUTO folder, the accessory will report that the
SERMOUSE.PRG program has not been installed. Which was and is
correct, but if you subsequently installed the SERMOUSE.PRG by
simply executing it, the accessory would continue to report
that the SERMOUSE.PRG driver is missing, which obviously is incorrect.
Release 1.03c will now correctly detect the SERMOUSE.PRG even if
you decide to run it from the desktop (as oposed to the AUTO folder
technique).
CyReL True Color VDI Update:
The blitting speed of the line drawing code in the True Color
VDI has once again been updated and improved. Also, the previous
bug in the patterned vertical lines (define a clip on an image
in GEM-View to watch the effect... the vertical lines will simply
change to a solid black line after a short while...) has been
fixed.
Monitor and CD-ROM Specials from Hitachi:
Hitachi is now offering special deals on it's CM1582 (15" SVGA)
and CM1785ME (17" SVGA, up to 1280x1024). Check your local
Hitachi dealer for pricing information.
Hitachi also introduced a new line of XA compatible CD-ROM drives,
single speed and double speed under the CDR1850, CDR1900, CDR6700
and CDR6750 labels. The CDR1850 (external) and the CDR6750 (internal)
are ready-to-use SCSI drives. For more info, please contact Hitachi

Next, two new *.VTG (video timing files) updates:
Please capture the following two messages and delete any header lines
in order to extract the *.VTG informations. Once you restored this
straight ASCII files, copy them into the \256COLOR\ folder on your
HD.
WARNING: Please do not use these VTG files UNLESS you have a proper
monitor. Always refer to the documentation of your monitor
to find out if the use of the according VTG file is safe.
You can easily determine this by checking the title line
in each file, since it lists the maximum frequencies
generated by the CyReL M16-1280 graphics card.
Example:
Let's assume you would like to use the new H1282x1K.VTG (high refresh,
1280x1024, second revision VTG file) listed below.
First, the name of the file indicates that your monitor must at least
be able to handle the 1280x1024 resolution. If your monitor specifications
do not go that high, do _NOT_ use this file!
Next, let's have a look at the title line: it states that the timings
for this mode will give you a 1280x1024 resolution at 70 Hz.
So, please check whether your monitor can handle 70Hz. If not, please
do _NOT_ use this file.
OK, now check the important horizontal line frequency! The file below
will give you:
1280x1024 @ 70 Hz with a horizontal scanning
rate of 72.4 kHz.
Again, check your monitor documentation to see whether it supports
such a high horizontal frequency! If not, please do _NOT_ use this
file.
The same is true for the second (H1Kx768.VTG) file following this
message.
Please report any problems to CYBERCUBE.
Ralf.

COMPO/EURO SOFT's STUDIO PHOTO tested on the CyReL M16-1280:
We've just completed our tests of this fast, new retouching
program. The clear and very technical manual helps you to quickly
learn the amazing array of manipulation tools that this program
offers.
We have tested Studio Photo in various resolutions in 256 color
and True Color modes. It ran flawless. For the True Color mode,
we recommend that you run the TC_SHIFT.PRG (to be found in the
\MISC\ folder of your M16 Drivers & Utilities disk) before
starting Studio Photo.
The program works with SEF,TIFF,GIF,TGA,PCX,IFF,DEGAS,NEO,JPEG
and PHOTO CD images. It is rather quick when loading and
processing the image files.
Studio Photo really shines when it comes to filter/convolution
functions, rotating (even at very odd angles) and scaling. Some
of the most widely used touch-up functions are performed with
refreshing speeds.

Gregg,
yep, you are right. Daewoo has been around for quite some time. It
is getting increasingly difficult to make out which monitors are
the 'originals' and which ones are OEM products. We've just seen
an 'explosion' of the number of monitor manufacturers and offers
(e.g. in the ASIAN BUYER'S GUIDE) since Windows has become more and
more popular (fueling the demand for higher quality monitors).
A few years ago text and mono only monitors were the _STANDARD_,
systems equipped with an color graphics monitor a rare exception.
This has changed dramatically and all manufacturers are scrambling
to satisfy the demand for higher performance display devices (not
only monitors in the traditional sense... just look at the advances
that LCD screens have made over the past 12 months).

I sent in for a registered version of Gemview two days ago. I have been

After playing with the sunrise card all day I have a couple of questions. I
have not quite made it through all of the documents that came with it, but I
have gone though the manual.
Is there any way to drop down to just 16 colors?? I have a program that
will work in STMED, STHIGH, and TTMED only. Since this program is very time-
specific, it is very picky on resolution. I am pretty sure that if I could
get to a 16 color screen it would run. I am talking about SMPTE Track
Platinum. I have tried all of the emulation options in the CONF accessory.
Are there any True Color .VTG's that will work on Atari's PTC 1426

Does anyone here use the VIDI mix 8/16?

Ralf,
The bug fix worked, of course, and now I can use Ambiance. One more little
problem. Seems that the last item to be loaded in my system is the palette as
used by the M16 Palette Master. What this does is to then rewrite the palette
of whatever I'm using in Ambiance. I have saved the palette for Ambiance so
this does not happen, for now.
Perhaps there is a way to fix this?
Daniel
Spud Boy,
The only solution I have to you problem is the one I use. I have a switch
box set up to my monitor that allows me to switch between the Cyrel video out
and the Normal TT video out. I also use XBoot to set the drivers for the card

Vortext, Where did you get the switch box?
I have noticed that the key repeat rates seem to be different (longer). Am I
dreaming or does the video card's software cause this? I had to speed them up
in the CPX. Not that this is a problem, but I have been using Atari's for 7
years and have never adjusted that before.
I did find those true color VTG files. I just had to look at the file names a
little closer. duh
It is odd that it can't drop down to 16 colors. The feature list I have says
it will work in monochrome, 4, 16, 256, and True color without hardware
modifications or expansions.

I got my switch box from my local dealer, ATY Computer in Oakland, Ca. 510-482-

almost anywhere. Even normal computer stores. Just tell them you're looking
for a box to switch between VGA monitors.

Spud Boy,
I've posted some addresses and sources for switch-boxes somewhat
'earlier' in this topic. If you are still looking for one, please
go back a few messages...
Key repeat rate:
well, we affect a number of things with our software, but this is
the first time I heard of this effect. *grin*, no seriously, we
do not change or influence the key repeat rate. But speeding it
up by a little bit never hurts and many find that they suddenly
got a 'faster machine' because the system seems to respond that
much faster...

16 color mode:
The majority of users buy the CyReL M16-1280 for either 256 color
or True Color applications. A 16 color VDI driver has been in the
worx, but was scrapped due to lack of demand.
So far, we offer a monochrome VDI driver (the MonoFLEX with the
CyReL MPT-16 module), a 256 color VDI driver and a True Color
VDI driver.
The card/hardware works in all of these modes you listed.
Studio Photo Demo:
Yep, you are right. Sorry, the new versions of the M16-1280 software
contains a small file with some hints and tips regarding Studio
Photo and other programs. The TC_SHIFT.PRG program simply 'tells'
the card to emulate the aRGB mode (as used by the MATRIX cards).
CyReL CaTTamaran gives the CyReL M16-1280 an extra boost:
Another Cybercube product, the CyReL CaTTamaran TT accelerator module
has been enhanced to include a TurboVME feature. This additional
function increases the speed of all VME bus cycles and thus helps to
speed up the CyReL M16-1280 graphics cards as well. The functions
have not been fully tested yet, but a sustained 33% increase of
speed has been recorded so far. To what extend this feature will be
included in the final version has not been confirmed yet.

A note on Ambiance. It would seem that Ambiance and the Pallet master acc
don't agree on color. Ambiance loads in its pictures then Pallet master
scrambles the colors to its own taste. I've tried saving the the Ambiance
pallet as the startup.pal, but for some reason I can't get the acc to save a
pallet. Hmmm.
Also, when using Flash II from Missionware, upon exit from the program the
screen only redraws the bottom half of the picture, leaving a white background
on the upper half. All icons and the menu bar are present however. Re-entering
Ambiance and exiting causes a redraw and all is well again.

Rolf, Daniel,
I will U/L the TC_SHIFT files here on GEnie for you to download them.
They are not very large (probably less than 10K compressed).
The archive contains the driver and the necessary documentation.
So watch those U/L listings for the TC_SHIFT.ZIP file!
CyReL Ambiance & CyReL Palette Master:
Have a look at the options page in your Ambiance accessory. Make
sure the SysColor box is _NOT_ checked! (This tells the system that
Ambiance will have control over the color palette).
Set Ambiance to work in the PALETTE, FADED mode!
Next, save the AMBIANCE.INF file. If you now display the
PAL_MSTR.INF file (boot drive, root directory) you should see that
the CyReL Palette Master command DEF_PALETTE has been changed to
#DIS_PALETTE! Ergo, the CyReL Palette Master will _NOT_ attempt
to load it's onw colors next time you boot.
We will change this procedure so that you are not forced anymore
to set the PALETTE, FADED mode. The SysColor box should be sufficient
to enable/disable the #DEF_PALETTE command from the Palette Master
utility.

Hmmm... *grin* I have to admit that we haven't updated that

Tim,
to find out which of the predefined modes will run on your monitor,
check your monitor manual and try to locate the max. horizontal
and max. vertical frequencies for your model.
Then, have a look at the *.VTG files. There is a title line in
each of them that actually tells you about the used frequencies,
thus giving you a pretty good indication if it will run on your
monitor or not.... better if it would be safe!
Please keep in mind that the max. limits of your monitor have
been included in your manual to actually guide you as to what
may be advisable and what not. Staying within those limits
will guarantee you a 'healthy' monitor.
*,*
\_/
VORTEXT,
yep, those colored bands are right. When you select those, open
the Palette Master, then select one of the supplied AMBxxx.PAL or
create your own color fading _WITH_ the help of the Palette Master.
As for the other problem you reported, have a look at some of
the last messages, where I explained the procedure to get it to
work properly.

Has anyone gotten True Paint to work on the Cyrel Card, yet? I just got it at
the Toad Fest...but the colors are screwed up. It seems to just see the 1st
16 colors and ignore the rest in True Color modes. However, it seems to work
fine in 256 color mode.

Corner Clocks have been the topic of discussion in several of the topics
lately. In the falcon compatability topic there was reference to a resolution
independant clock called "Zeitgeist".
I downloaded the file and found it to work on the Sunrise in both 256 color
and True Color modes.
The file is:

The Nova guy in Germany says that the problem with color icons in Multi-tos is
a problem in the AES.
So far I have not seen color icons work properly on ANY unpaletted (16, 24 or

Fast Tech,
GENEVA works under true color on the Cyrel card. However, it will not load
from the Auto folder. Also there are problems with the text color. Instead
of having text that is black on white, I get text that is black with light
blue behind the letters, even though the rest of the screen is white. It
kinda looks like all of the text is highlighted with blue. The color pallette
seems screwed up. Maybe this is all just under NEOdesk and has nothing to do
with GENEVA.

I don't have GENEVA or NEOdesk, so I'm probably way off base, but have you
tried using the TC_SHIFT.PRG before going to GENEVA-NEOdesk? I know this helps
with some other programs where the color is off.

Lorne asked me a couple of questions in email. I am taking the liberty of
re-posting them here for everyone:
---
I have a couple of questions regarding the Cyrel graphics card. I'll
ask here first and go to Cybercube if you feel that would be
appropriate.
1. I loaded the T512x514.vtg driver and after going through the
bootup process, I got the Cyrel M16-1280 graphic displayed in the
center of the screen and then NO desktop. What might be causing
this problem? Is there a way to get to the desktop from this
screen?
BTW, I am using a MAG MX17F monitor.
The only solution I could find to resolving the above problem was to
reboot in standard Atari mode (no Cyrel card), then delete all of
the Cyrel files and folders and go back through the Cyrel
installation process.
2. Another problem I seem to be having is with the display. The
screen displays as diagrammed below, although not as severe as
indicated by my diagram.
--------------
\ \
\ \
\ \
\ \
\ \
--------------
The actual variance from the top to the bottom of the screen is
probably about 3/8ths of an inch.
Do you have any idea of what might be causing this problem? Is there
any obvious known solution for resolving this situation? I thought I
would ask here first again, since I know you are familiar with the
MAG monitors.
The above mentioned problem appears more noticeable as the resolution
is increased.
Other than these two situations, I must say I am extremely pleased
with the Cyrel board.
Thanks again for your support, and I am looking forward to your
responses.
Lorne....

Lorne,
I too have a Mag MX17F monitor and maybe I can help ypu out a little.
First Resolutions below 640x480 do not show up on the monitor. Resolutions
between 640X480 and my favorite for running Calamus 1280X1040 run fine as long
as the correct scanning frequencies are used.
The ones that I use regula 5R
256 color: V645X480.VTG
800x600.VTG
1KX768.VTG
1280X1K.VTG
True Color: TV640X48.VTG
T960X544.VTG
T800X608.VTG
As far as the skewing of your screen goes, I have no idea. My screen display
is vertical.

Nathan,
Thanks for the usual prompt attention to my order. As regards the
compatability issue with graphics cards the following ones are the most
important:
Calligrapher, Wordplus, Fleet Street Pub 3, Cardfile 4, Diamond Edge, Diamond
Back, Neodesk 3, Warp 9, Xboot, LGSelect, Maxifile 3, Multidesk, Steno, Sage
Accountant Plus, Stalker, Aladdin, Interlink, ICD Pro utilities, Degas Elite,
K Spread, Superbase Pro, Touch up, Migraph OCR, Merge it, Arabesque, Easydraw,
Imagecopy2, DataManager, Data Manager Pro, GFA Basic 3.
Please let me know, as far you can, the problems both with the Cyrel
and the Crazy Dots cards. One very important detail I would like to know is
whether the computer can be booted without the use of the card so that any
problem software can be used in a native system. By the way my monitor is a
multisync.

re: Louis Smith compatibility request.
I don't have all the software either but I can give some advice. With a
program like Xboot, Desk Manager, or Super Boot first in the auto folder, You
can select to boot with or without the Cyrel card. With one monitor and a
switch box you can easily go from the card and the standard TT monitor
resolutions.
The programs that I have that are included in Louis' list, my findings are:
Diamond edge yes
Diamond Back yes
Warp 9 No (The cyrel has its own
acceleration)
LGSelect Yes
Maxifile 3 Yes
Multidesk Yes
Aladdin Yes
ICD Pro Utilities Yes
Touch up No
Migraph OCR No

Thanks for your response re: the MAG minimum resolutions. That may explain why
I experienced the problem I did. I have since noted that all resolutions I've
tried between 640x480 and 1280x1024 have worked just fine.
I have still not figured out why I am experiencing the screen skewing problem.
REALM,
I have not found an adjustment that would seem to correct the skewing problem.
Perhaps a call to the manufacturer will be in order. I'm going to contact
Sheldon first and see if he may have any ideas.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you all know what the outcome is
hopefully in the not too distant future.

***** Rather Long Post to Follow ****
***** Be Forwarned! ****
Louis,
To help add to the confusion of the compatability question, I've had the
following results with some of the software you ask about.
Calligrapher: This program will not work with the Cyrel card. It will indeed
load just fine, however, due to the method in which Calligrapher writes its
text to the screen, all you get are little colored boxes. Sorry.
Cardfile 4: This program works just fine, I use it all the time, in many
configurations and with a variety of other software.
Diamond Edge: It works in 256 mode at least. I have not fully run it under
True Color as I do most of my work in 256. (Fear not folks, I DO use TC when
it counts.)
Diamond Back: The same story as DE. 256 for sure, not so sure about TC.
Warp 9: Sorry. This one is a major crash dive. The accelaration within the
Cyrel card doesn't like competition. In the fight for suppremacy, your system
loses.
XBoot: Versions II and III both work, you simply need to set them up
differently. Version II is run before the Cyrel drivers so that you can see
the menu screen and thereby activate your ACCs and Auto PRGs as you like. This
also a great way to turn the Cyrel card on or off so that you can work with
those pesky programs that don't like it. Version III however needs to be run
AFTER XBoot or else when you finish booting, you have no mouse control. Weird,
yes. But that's the way it is.
LGS: I use it.
Maxifile: Here's another story. Yes you can use it. No not for everything.
Again, due to the text writing routines you cannot view files from within
maxifile. You need to go back to the desktop to do this. Also, in TC Maxifile
becomes unstable, I'd suggest not using it.
Multidesk: It works, but not all the ACCs you have loaded neccassarily will.
Be careful.
Steno: A funny thing here. It's okay until you need to do that third screen
redraw. For some reason once it scrolls for the third time it decides to stop
working and takes the rest of your computer with it. Re-boot time folks!
Otherwise...it's wonderful for short notes.
Aladdin: This one does work, although I prefer the scrolling in 256 mode as
opposed to the TC method. Much cleaner.
Touch-Up: You can forget this one in TC. It will work under 256 but you can't
use the Fast-Bit mode. When you do, it scrambles your picture into really
funny scragglies.
OCR: I've only had the chance to use it a little. But so far it has behaved
itself. 256 not TC
As to the other software on your list, I have not had the chance to get to
some of those yet but I thought I would pass along what I did have so far. I
have tested a fair amount of other software on the Cyrel as well, with decent
results.
One thing to keep in mind, as has been mentioned before, I would highly
recommend that you get a switch box, or a second monitor, if you get the Cyrel
card. This way you will be able to use ALL your software just as you have been
by simply turning off the Cyrel drivers as needed. I admit it would be far
nicer if everything worked well together and there was no need to turn the
machine off and on depending on the use you had in mind. This becomes
particularly annoying when in the middle of something you realize that you
forgot to do some small piece of work and need to re-boot your system because
the software you have to use is incompatible. I know, I've done it.
I hope this helps a little and I'm sorry if I took so much time. (Actually,
I'm NOT sorry. I enjoyed it.)

Louis,
I'll add my two cents worth to the discussion based on my experiences to-date.
CodeHead products: The only thing that I have been able to run is MultDesk,
but like has already been mentioned, some of the accessories it loads may not.
I make special mention of the above, since I have a large number of CodeHead
products, the latest versions, and unfortunately they do NOT get along with
the Cyrel card.
Other experiences:
Program Runs? (Most of my testing has been in
256 colors while running either
800x600 or 1024x768.) Alladin
Yes Migraph OCR Yes Migraph Touchup Yes Superbase 2
Yes Calamus SL Yes WordFlair II Yes Pha$ar
Yes (Runs in top left corner of screen
but works fine.) SuperBoot
Yes (I use this to control whether I boot
with or without the Cyrel card
loaded. I have a Monitor Switch
between my monitor and the Cyrel and
Atari monitor ports.)
* I would recommend the switch and a
program like SuperBoot, XBoot, etc.
which will permit you to run all
your existing software, whether it
works with the Cyrel or not.
SysInfo No Doesn't crash but tells you it does
not run in selected resolution.
Well that is about it for this post. I am going to be doing a great deal of
testing in the coming week as I will have the week off. I will post my
findings later next week.

clock. I'll try it as soon as I can since I've had several people asking
for something like this!
Tim,
yep, *grin* there has been a lot of interest since we've announced the
new pricing structure. The CyReL M16-1280 architecture will be expanded
shortly with a string of new products.... but shhhh! Don't tell anybody!

Rolf,
multi-colored icons in TC: acknowledged. This is a bug in the present
version of the TC VDI. We've fixed it already, but somehow the wrong
(and still faulty VDI version) has been released to our customers.
Sorry for the inconvenience. You will be able to display the correct
icons shortly with the coming TC VDI update.
John,
yes, there are a few hidden bugs... not only in our VDI *grin* but
also the AES. But there are ways to fix that as well.
Jim,
as I just explained to Rolf, there is still a bug (with three legs and
only one eye *grin*) in our VDI that inhibits the correct display of
those icons. Will be fixed in the next VDI update. Promised! *,*
\_/
Tim,
GENEVA now boots also in True Color correctly. We've fixed that
previous malfunction in cooperation with several parties (*grin*)
for which I want to thank everyone involved!

Bob,
I haven't seen the 'black text on blue' effect you described.
Can anyone give me some tips on how to reproduce the bug?
Lorne,
512x514 True Color mode:
In order to run the VDI + LineA + VT52 Emulator + XBIOS drivers on
the CyReL M16-1280 graphics card, you should have a minimum resolution
of 640x400 pixels in _ANY_ mode (this limit is due to the fact that
our VT52 Emulator needs a 80x25 raster for the text display).
Re-booting:
You do not need to delete all the CyReL files and re-install them
in order to re-boot with a different mode/resolution. Simply use
an appropriate *.VTG file and drag it onto the XCHNG.TTP program.
This will reconfigure the mode and the resolution of the card.
Diagonal display on the screen:
This is a very odd effect. I haven't seen something like that so
far. Have you had the chance to test the *.VTG files that Bob is
using (refer to his post #188)?
Jim,
there have been several suggestions regarding a 'LITE' version
of the CyReL M16-1280 graphics cards. I do not know right now how
far these ideas have progressed. If you have any particular
suggestions or tips, we would be delighted if you could e-mail them
directly to CYBERCUBE. I'll relay the messages then to the
right people. *grin*
Right now we are very pleased with the interest generated by our
recent price cuts. We slashed $500 from the price tag to make the
CyReL M16-1280 and VidiMix16 combo even more attractive!
Of course, you can buy both products separatly or in a bundle,
as required.

Bob,
thanks for the compatibility list. It's nice to see that our VDI
driver is getting more and more flexible to even accomodate some
more 'demanding' applications and programs.

Tim,
normally you do not need to install the TC_SHIFT.PRG in the \AUTO\ folder.
Please refer to the TC_SHIFT.DOC file in your \M16_MISC\ folder for
installation details!
Accelerators:
True Color represents 4 times more information per pixel than 256 color
modes and 32 times as much as monochrome. So things tend to be 'a little
slower' in TC. Therefore we recommend TC for imaging, graphing, video
and other visual applications rather than for spreadsheet calculations
or heavy text scrolling stuff. I think the whole concept works best
when you select the most appropriate mode for each program.
VORTEXT,
thanks for your compatibility report.
Here a few notes:
STENO:
We've just received a copy of it from Gribnif to correct the scrolling
bug. I'll keep you updated. Thanks to those fast guys at Gribnif for their
support and cooperation!
Warp 9:
our VDI driver replaces the original VDI and has been optimized
anybody else messing too much with the screen you can't and do not
to provide the best possible output for your CyReL M16-1280 graphics
card. Granted, the major part of our VDI is written in C and incorporates
quite some overhead which could be eliminated and optimized through
the use of 100% assembly code, but the present method insures faster
driver updates and shorter maintenance cycles.
Thanks again for your great efforts in testing and evaluation the
compatibility of all those programs you listed. Good job!
Lorne,
thanks for the update on your findings. Please forward a list of
the CodeHead utilities you found do not work properly with our
card to CYBERCUBE. We'll then try to check whether you would have
to change something on your setup or if we have to correct our
drivers. Any help will be appreciated.
Nathan, Lou,
thanks for keeping an eye on the proceedings in this category.
If I missed anyone or if there are any unanswered questions,
please say so ... so that we can straighten it out.

It's nice to be back and see all this interest.
Ralf.

Program Runs? (Most of my testing has been in
256 colors while running either
800x600 or 1024x768.)
Alladin Yes
Migraph OCR Yes
Migraph Touchup Yes
Superbase 2 Yes
Calamus SL Yes
WordFlair II Yes
Pha$ar Yes (Runs in top left corner of screen
but works fine.)
SuperBoot Yes (I use this to control whether I boot
with or without the Cyrel card
loaded. I have a Monitor Switch
between my monitor and the Cyrel and
Atari monitor ports.)
* I would recommend the switch and a
program like SuperBoot, XBoot, etc.
which will permit you to run all
your existing software, whether it
works with the Cyrel or not.
SysInfo No Doesn't crash but tells you it does
not run in selected resolution.
